Dumbledore is in general very suggested in these chapters. People keep referring to him. Mrs Weasley uses him as the basis for her argument with Sirius. I cannot help feeling that this is the book where Dumbledore fails. Hmmm. That is too harsh. I am thinking about the decision whether to tell Harry or not. I suppose his position is an impossible one. He cannot tell Harry everything (because that would leave him more open to an attack from Voldemort), and he apparently recognises the danger of incomplete information (quite rightly); but again, he must know Harry will not react well to being kept entirely out of the loop.

I would agree with the whole Dumbledore fails thing in this case. Yes, it's harsh, but really. He's known Harry for several years now, and he knows how he thinks and operates. He wants to be in action, and if there's nothing he knows, he's clearly going to try and find it on his own. Dumbledore seemed to figure it out in the first book, dropping hints for saving the Stone and whatnot. Obviously things are getting more serious (although in retrospect that was a pretty serious thing too), and Dumbledore should really know better than to try to "protect" Harry by not telling him anything.


Yes, it is a little out of character.

Kreacher: I love him. He is all that Dobby is not. He is interesting. And he is in the same position as Dobby: forced to serve someone he does not want to serve, ill treated, passive agressive. But he lacks Dobby's annoyingness. Which is good.

He is slightly more interesting than Dobby, at least as we learn more about him, but in a way I feel he's just caricature at the opposite end of the spectrum. I understand he's a bit nuts, but there's got to be some point that he's not muttering and insulting, right? Maybe not.


I don't mind caricatures (I love Lockhart). It depends on how they are written. I feel that Kreacher's mutterings are different from Dobby's incessant self-punishment and whining and adulation, mainly because they seems genuinely accidental (he really does think they cannot hear him: why else would he mutter about the hanging when asked what he is after? -- thinking of it, that can of course be explained away as a ruse, to keep their minds occupied with something he cannot steal while he sneaks off with something else, but still), and also because he is negative. I like snide.

Ginny: her adoration for Bill and her "noise like an angry cat" are both endearing. As is her ability to lie with a straight face.

I absolutely love Ginny in these chapters. The lying about the Dungbombs was fabulous, and she just really seems to be coming into her own here. Obviously she's played important parts in the series so far, but we haven't really seen her as a force in her own right until now.
