Later on, when Voldemort does start killing people (or his followers do, at any rate), it is reported in the muggle press as a massive accident with the bridge, amongst other things.

Wasn't the Prophet reporting on some of this, up until Voldemort infiltrated them to keep everyone confused? They were blaming everything on Sirius at the beginning in OotP, so Harry could have gotten more information from that than TV. At least they were reporting things that happened if pushing the blame to someone else.

I seem to remember reading that things were reported as freak accidents in the muggle news, but that some of the truth came out in the Prophet (for at least a short time anyway). For the most part, the Prophet is corrupted throughout the story. I just had the impression that for a short period of time, briefly in OotP and under Scrimegour, they were actively reporting what was happening.

I think you are thinking of the beginning of Half-Blood Prince?
