I take it Umbridge is the one who has told Filtch that Harry is planning to order Dungbombs, in an attempt to have him watched. And that she deliberately dropped Quirrel's name in class to provoke a reaction from Harry. Devious bitch.
Probably. Surely he could've controlled himself on that one, though, it's not as if it really left him traumatized or anything. Not like Cedric.
True. Although his remark was fairly restrained. More like a sarcastic aside, and far removed from the shouting earlier. Fairly restrained for Harry, I'd say. Still stupid, of course.
Regarding themes, the house-elf issue shows up again, with Hermione displaying a very problematic attitude, which parallels that of the witches and wizards who have traditionally spoken on behalf of and felt they could dictate the destinies of house-elves.
Yeah. It's a way of showing the traditional problems with emancipation, I suppose - not only do the oppressed groups not necessarily want to be free, but their self-appointed champions can be quite patronizing and claim to know what's best for them. Hermione seems to be so frustrated about the lack of enthusiasm from the house-elves about freedom that she tries forcing the issue (you have a point that it's unclear whether her clothes would count, but we'll see later that at least the house-elves do correctly guess her intentions).
I get flashbacks to a certain type of western feminism.
One could argue it shows Hermione is still more in the academic world than in the real world, despite her significant progress, and is suffering from youthful excess confidence and optimism.
Yes. She reminds me of me when I was 16. Which is probably part of the reason why it irks me.
The bigotry-theme suffuses the whole section (and the whole book). It hovers like a cloud around Umbridge, and shows up regularly in the Prophet. The casualness of the position, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, is very well written.
Yeah. And quite disturbing, particularly with goblins fitting a few of the traditional anti-Semitic clichés.
True.
Oh, and I was going to mention this Monday - calling Lupin a "half-breed" really does not make any sense. Hagrid is a "half-breed", Lupin isn't. His problem has nothing to do with breeding or blood purity.
Yes. I suppose part of the problem of this sort of thing is a muddling of vocabulary. "They are all the same" type thing. I suppose you could argue that his blood is tainted by the werewolf-thing, so it is related to blood purity (although not in the genealogy sense of it).
The "abuse of power" theme, which is closely connected to the bigotry one, is also out in force.
And the theme of taking one's wishes - or fears, as in Fudge's case - for reality. Hermione, Percy, Sirius, Fudge and Umbridge, they all do it. Might be a coincidence, though, I suppose it's the sort of thing you find everywhere once you start looking for it.
And that of shadings of character: you need not be a death eater to be bad. We had it in the preceding book, with Crouch, Fudge has been making the point by his mere presence, and now Umbridge. I suppose this ties in with the Dumbledore not being perfect stance: just because he is a wise old man and a Good Guy, he is able to make mistakes.
