What was it Dumbledore saw in the smoke? The "in essence divided"? Is it a reference to Nagini being a Horcrux? Or about Voldemort possessing her? Or about Harry? I cannot make it out.
I was wondering too. Extremely cryptic by Rowling's standards, that - generally she doesn't do that. My best guess is it refers to the manner of Voldemort's possessing Nagini, without necessarily implying he knows about the Horcrux already. A really cryptic way of saying Voldemort isn't an Animagus but just controls Nagini somehow?
Ah, yes. That is a good point. Especially since Harry is about to go on a rant about how Voldemort may be a animagus and that he when possessing him may make him an animagus, too, and then transporting him across London to kill Mr Weasley. Seriously. That is one impressive leap of the imagination.
Also, Sirius tells Kreecher "OUT", which is the ambiguous order that makes it possible for him to throw a spanner in the works. It is interesting how this plot event is handled. The correct theory is voiced -- that he has left the house -- (and by Harry, no less), and then it is matter-of-factly reported that ``Kreecher, it transpired, had been lurking in the attic''. Good burying. It seems like an authoritative, objective narrator correcting the mistaken assumption, but it is anything but. And it is reinforced by Harry finding the explanation lacking. By this time, all readers will have picked up on Harry always being wrong, and now she uses it against us.
Yeah, that was well done. It's also interesting in thematic terms how Harry knows things about house-elves Sirius never realized despite living with them his whole childhood - because Harry has encountered them in such a different way and seen a different side of them.
Yes. To be fair, Sirius probably spent as much time as possible avoiding Kreecher. And Harry's experience with them was kind of forced on him. If Dobby had not showed up it is likely he would never have heard of them (well, with the exception of Winky) -- he never asked how the food got on plates in Hogwarts before book 4.
Broderick Bode gets a mention on the first visit to St. Mungo's, and then the plant is introduced while they visit Lockhart. Just as we are told his language may slowly be returning.
Yeah. One thrown into Azkaban, one in St. Mungo's and assassinated when it looks like he might start talking (though I guess Bode wasn't necessarily under the Imperius, perhaps he just caught them in the act at some point). The Death Eaters have still maintained their secret. Now Rookwood is about to be freed, so there won't be a third attempt until the fateful day.
True.
Incidentally, it seems quite likely that times like these are when Lucius' gifts to St. Mungo's come in handy: he gets inside information on patients of interest, thus allowing timely action.
Good point.
And Sirius' mirror for communicating. I love that touch, as it provides an avenue of communication which Harry could have used. It makes the end all the more tragic because he forgets about it. And the reason why he forgets about it is of course that he, already from the beginning, has resolved never to use it because he connects using it to driving Sirius from the safety of HQ. The reason for not using it is therefore the same as what he ends up doing by not using it. Classic tragic pattern. Did I mention Rowling does the tragedy plot quite well?
Yes, I was thinking of your comments about tragedies when I read that. It is a classic example. Though it's also a pet peeve of mine in books when characters for whatever reason refuse to even consider such a gift or note or whatever and throw it away or ignore it immediately for emotional reasons. Don't they have basic curiosity? Maybe I just don't have strong enough emotions, or too much curiosity.
True. I find it hard to believe, too. Althouhg I think Rowling does a good job justifying it here. The attempt to keep Sirius from harm is the overriding impulse of Harry in this book. And he does get distracted when he returns to school.
Similarly, the Occlumency session is what provides Harry with the knowledge he needs to do Voldemort's bidding in going to the Department of Mysteries.
Yeah. I'm not sure how to take the repeated charge that Snape is "opening Harry up for Voldemort" - obviously it isn't his intention, but it does seem to be the effect, and should he not realize that and take measures accordingly?
Well, he tells Harry to practice, and Harry never does. If he did, the sessions might not open him up.
Snape's observation that eye contact is often essential in legilimency provides a reason for Dumbledore's studied avoidance of Harry's eyes.
And adds particular meaning to the way Voldemort walked around his circle of followers and looked into all their eyes last book.
Ah, yes. Good point.
I take it Voldemort's happiness is in relation to the mass outbreak from Azkaban.
I believe so, we'll hear about it in the next chapter.
I thought it might. (I am being very good about not reading ahead.)
