We see a wordless spell in action. I am sure Harry and Hermione treated him as less of a threat because he could not utter the words, and then he takes her out. Again, at this point I was dreading the death of someone (unfocused) -- the rumours had been around for months. I did not really think she could kill off Hermione, but…

Yeah, showing us the importance of non-verbal spells a book early - not quite as dramatically as Snape's repeat of the same message a book later, but still. It's also a much-needed indication that at least some Death Eaters are in fact better duelers than the Two Trios (yes, I'm having fun :P ), because one might start to wonder by that point.


Yes, I like that we get to see them in action properly occasionally. It highlights the fact that the kids often win not because of technical excellence, but because they are lucky or have a tactical advantage (like the prophecy).

Sirius' death is horrible. Like Cedric's it is so sudden. Which is surprisingly good writing. She actually produced in me the same lack of acceptance as Harry is described as feeling. I am impressed. And horribly, horribly sad and horrified. It is so horrible. I have never liked the tragedy-part of tragedies.

I do enjoy tragedies in a way, when they are done well - Antigone in particular. But that's mostly for the sense of inevitability and moving towards unavoidable doom, which isn't really present here.


I like tragedies, but hardly ever the tragedy-part of them. I am not sure that makes sense. I dislike the approaching doom. I hate knowing I can do nothing to stop it.

This one is well-done, too, and it certainly has its impact, on Harry and on the reader. Harry even tries one of the forbidden curses for the first and I believe last time (unless he does Imperiuses in book seven... I vaguely seem to recall something of the sort, but like you, I really, really need to reread that as I've forgotten so much), trying to make Bellatrix hurt as he is hurting, which of course fails.


True. I don't remember the Imperius either.

The spell that kills him: I have always assumed it was a Stupefy spell, and it has annoyed me greatly that in the film she shouts Avada Kedavra. But I see now that it is very ambiguous: it just says "light", no word on the colour of the light. I like that. It leaves it open whether he dies because he falls through the veil or whether he falls through because he is killed. I still hold to the first theory, but I enjoy ambiguity.

Since he has time to react, in his facial expression at least, I'm thinking no AK. Besides, it wouldn't make sense for Harry to expect Sirius to come back from behind the veil if it had been an AK.

What happens when Voldemort possesses Harry? Surely he cannot be properly disembodied, taking him over. I am a little confused on this point. I get the impression that he has entered Harry entirely, mainly because he is no longer a physical presence in the room. But I don't see how that is possible now that he is back to having a body.

Me neither, but on the other hand, leaving his own body passive while taking possession of Harry seems risky too, you never know what Dumbledore will do with it... it's not very clear. Definitely very different from Ginny's experience, though, whose advice ends up not being very helpful after all.

Does he really think for even one minute that Dumbledore would do as he suggests, though? Dumbledore didn't even try to kill him when he was still in his own body, why would he do it now? As an act of mercy to keep Harry from suffering more, perhaps, but he'd have to be extremely desperate before he did that.


Yes. It does not really make sense, except as a device in order to justify the explanation of love which is coming.

I'm wondering how Voldemort was in communication with the DEs, too. Somehow he has to be informed of the abysmal failure of the mission and the need for him to throw caution to the winds and come execute plan B... I suppose Bellatrix had time to contact him while running from Harry.


I always assumed he saw it through Harry. He knows Harry is not lying when he says the prophecy is gone, hence angery and arrival at the ministry.
