I was primarily thinking of the early fantasy writing as a reaction to the overwhelming experience of the first world war. Walter Benjamin wrote that after the war experience was no longer communicable, only information; and I suspect he was on to something. Avant-garde in the form of Modernism responded in one way; I think it makes sense to see Tolkien, for example, as a opposite but related response.


Could you clarify? I was under the impression Middle Earth became Tolkien's place of escapism, and that he strove to avoid allegory. Is that what you're saying, though?


What Tolkien thought he did and what he actually did does not necessarily have to be the same thing. I think the need for escapism, as you call it, is precisely a result of the experience of the first world war (and to a lesser extent modernity). Whether allegory plays into it is another question altogether.
