There's an interesting book in Russian that might be translated somewhere. Tom Send a noteboard - 02/12/2009 10:02:48 PM
It's called "Stalin and Authors" and it talks about the very unusual interaction that went on between Stalin and a lot of Soviet authors - how he was close to Gorky, liked Tolstoy's writings but not Tolstoy personally, loved Bulgakov's play and even called him on the phone to give him a job as director of a theatre (only to let him be railroaded by the rest of the people there), liked some authors only to then send them to the GULag...it's very interesting.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
