There is no state sponsored religion, no financial backing by the government. In order to be tax free, churches follow the same rules as any other non-for profit organization, not all of which are charities per se. Churches where the full take are the personal piggy bank of the staff (which are rare) are taxed as any other business, and employees of non-taxed churches still pay income tax like anyone else.
