There are many benefits that are granted by a legal marriage, such as legal rights between the individuals, tax benefits and insurance benefits. All of those instances require a legal marriage (or extensive paperwork can be filed in some cases), which requires an actual marriage along with marriage paperwork as many states also do not recognize "Common Law" marriages.

Are you sure the pointless institution you are referring to is not actually called a "Wedding"?
