It's probably worth noting people are horribly abusing the facts with a lot of citations of 'rights' going on here, however, for the sake of argument, can anyone justify gay marriage without justifying polygamy or incest and without mentioning procreation or two?

This is a tangent, but what are forums for if not tangents.


Well, not exactly a tangent, it is tangential to Dan's OP, but is written as a reply to him because several of the bits got raised throughout the thread. Not, in all fairness, that I've ever hesitated to wonder off on tangents.

There is nothing inherently evil in polygamy, or indeed polyandry. As long as it is an open and honest arrangement, I don't see a problem with it. In fact, it is much more acceptable to me than people cheating on their spouses.


As mentioned to Luke above, it is not a manipulative or steering question, it means what it says, does anyone have any arguments in favor, or against, gay marriage, that would not apply to polyetc or incest.

Incest is a whole other ball game.


Well, most of us feel that way, but it's probably worth asking why we do, because 'Yuck! That's disgusting, No' was by and large considered a completely legit reason to ban gay marriage until relatively recently. If asked today, most people feel obliged to give a reason, not so even a generation ago. It's probably worth mentioning that it is legal to marry your first cousin in a lot of states, and many others have a variety of laws in some cases permitting it when ages or circumstances effectively render the marriage sterile. This is interesting of course since it indicates that a reasonable expectation of procreation is wholly irrelevant to marriage.
