I should clarify that I support gay marriage

You are treating marriage simply as a religious function when it clearly is not. Atheists are married everyday and a lot of people simply get married by the JP. There is no reason to challenge churches on their teachers and a lot of reasons not to, the constitution being the top of the list. The Catholic church would not marry me because I am not a Catholic and have gone through their sacraments. That in no way impedes on my rights since I have a ton of other options that will get me a marriage just as valid in the eyes of society and in the eyes of the law.
You talk about the Catholic church denying to marry you, but it was okay because you went through different channels instead. Please, tell me exactly what other channels I have available to me? A domestic partnership is the only thing I can possibly get here in Ohio, and it doesn't really count for a whole lot. You can get a domestic partnership with basically anyone that you live with...it basically means "house partnership" anyway. Anyone that relies on you and whom you rely on for financial support and symbiosis.
My point was that it is the state of Ohio not the church who is stopping you.
Forgive me for wanting something more...definite.
This is like before Jim Crowe laws were revoked: An African American individual goes into a bank and gets denied service, but it's okay, because he lives in Atlanta where there are plenty of other banks to choose from, so the discrimination doesn't mean as much (well, according to your argument it doesn't).
no it is separation of church and state. Marriage is a state controlled function that the church is allowed to play a ceremonial role if that is the choice of those being married. That really is nothing like Jim Crow laws. I think is a grossly unfair and unjust that we do not allow people to marry anyone they want but I really don’t think it compares to suffering of blacks under Jim Crow.
Well, Random, I am in a fucking one stoplight town, where the only bank is a credit union with exclusive membership, and they don't want me.
The opposition to gay marriage goes much deeper than just religion. It is true that many fundamentalist use that as the basis for their opposition but their numbers are too small to stop gay marriage alone. To repeatedly block ballot initiatives all over the country there has to be staunch opposition that extends well beyond the religious right. <
quote>Really? Who cock blocked the gay marriage bill in California? It was all of the voters that normally don't turn out to these shindigs. What voters were those? Latinos (a group that is fairly religious and socially conservative), inner city African Americans (a group that is liberal, but fairly socially conservative); and the blue collared groups of individuals that are both socially and fiscally conservative individuals.
Well the majority of the country is Christians so any majority vote will have majority Christians support. The question is if these people tend towards social constructivism but why.
All of the aforementioned groups sound like they are religiously influenced to me, and not influenced by governmental policy.
I never said they were influenced by government policy so I am not sure where that is coming form.
My point was that to get the votes to pass prop 8 required more votes then those who typically vote on religious grounds. You can call the African Americans socially conservative but with 70% of their children being born out of wedlock you really can't call them that socially conservative. The numbers of Latinos are really not that much better.
The high divorce rate, drug usage and children born out of wedlock shows us that societal norms easily trump church teachings. It is society not the church that is the problem.
And why, pray tell, does society have such a problem with the gays? I don't remember any fireside chats with Ike talking about the crimes of gays; rather, I seem to remember a lot of indoctrination by the church as a young kid growing up in an overly-religious western country.
I don't really know. I suspect that it has to do with the emphasis our society put on masculinity and the perception that gays are less then masculine. Being called gay is one of the worst insults on the playground maybe that plays a role. Most heterosexual men find gay sex to be rather gross and that probably plays a role as well.
Whatever the reason I think it is the church reflecting society not the other way around. You can beat that not by making it gays vs the church (a sure loser) but make it a question of basic human rights and by making gay marriage seem less threatening. Attacking church doctrine and the way we do marriage doesn't accomplish that.
