It's a difficult dynamic even under the best of circumstances, when both partners have chosen it. Sareitha Sedai Send a noteboard - 12/01/2011 02:25:20 PM
Sorry I am sure there are real SAHD but the few I met were just bums being supported by their wives. And no I am not being sexist I call them bums because even though a few actaully did keep the kids none of them kept the house. Small sampling I will admit but that was sort of the point.

Are you sure you're not being sexist, though? Are you comparing them with what you think a real man should be? Btw, It's a rhetorical question out of curiosity, not an accusation. Think about why you feel that way.

There are some families that realize that the wife's job pays more, so the dad stays home. Or, in this economic climate, the dad loses his job and is forced into that position. Some of them say that other men look down upon them as lazy. "what, you married a woman smarter than you, you ain't man enough to make the money," etc.

Some have expressed enlightenment at how much harder it is than they thought it would be, and some were never expected to clean anything other than their rooms growing up and are struggling with this unknown territory. Societal change takes longer than 2 generations.

It could be as you say, and the ones you know just haven't been trained properly. ;)

For as much as SAHMs complain (rightfully in many cases) about a lack of respect/support system/etc., it's way worse for SAHDs. Apart from their own biological and psychological pressures. And for a guy who is forced into that role due to job loss (already a serious blow to the ego), such arrangements are practically doomed right from the start.

There are SAHMs who are "bums" just being supported by their husbands too, who keep the kids but not the house, or just hire out to nannies and/or housekeepers. And I suspect there are enough of them that that's part of the reason the choice is looked down upon. But even that is seen as more acceptable than when those roles are reversed ;)
