as a native English speaker who'll begin an attempt to learn another language Monday I find it a royal pain.... :[

Wasn't it something about how there are three genders in some dialects, but only two in the official language? Or am I completely misremembering that? I know there was some difference between some dialects and the official language (of course, with Norwegian the question always is, which of the two...).

I seem to remember Lene saying something like "bil" ("car" ) is neuter in "standard" Bokmål but feminine in Trøndersk (for some reason it's "Trøndersk" and "Trøndelag" but "Trondheim"; I've found instances of both spellings for the last, but the one given seems to be preferred even here). Also, some genius decided that when Norway became independent it needed it's own new uniquely Norwegian language, so he created Nynorsk, but most people didn't like it and continue speaking Bokmål--except for the 15% or so of the country that speaks Nynorsk instead. I'm sure Camilla and Milla will cringe if they see this, but it reflects my understanding three days before starting my Norskkurs. I just thank God that it seems MOST Bokmål words are cognates with either German (which I had four years of in HS) or English (of which I also have a working knowledge).
