Getting a photo ID requires what, an hour of the day, and $20? It's necessary and useful for a whole lot more than elections, so only a very tiny portion of the population is without such ID anyway. Of those people without an ID, the vast majority would be illegal immigrants, wouldn't it? There is nothing wrong with them being unable to vote.

According to the Texas survey I noted in my reply, it's about 7.5 percent of eligible voters (therefore, not counting illegal immigrants) who do not have photo ID. I don't know if that percentage applies across the entire country though. Certainly enough to tilt an election one way or the other if all of them voted compared to none of them voting. Of course the reality of how many do/don't or would/wouldn't is somewhere in between.

What forms of photo ID are there other than driver's licenses that people can get easily? I'm asking out of curiosity, because here in Canada I can't really think of any off the top of my head that I've ever personally encountered. My only photo IDs are my driver's license and an old provincial Metis association card that expired years ago. People who don't have cars and have never driven would have a hard time qualifying for a driver's license, and people who are homeless would have no fixed address to have one mailed to. But there may well be other forms of photo ID one can easily obtain in the US.

How does requiring photo ID disenfranchise the black/minority community? - 15/01/2012 05:14:16 PM 1745 Views
I certainly don't know. *NM* - 15/01/2012 05:32:42 PM 460 Views

It "disenfranchises" whoever only barely brings him- or herself to vote as it is. - 15/01/2012 05:34:50 PM 761 Views
That really only reinforces the idea to me that this is just people looking to fight about something *NM* - 15/01/2012 05:45:37 PM 444 Views

I believe most states also offer a non-drivers ID issued by the DMV - 16/01/2012 12:12:09 AM 719 Views
Also passports work too in most places. *NM* - 16/01/2012 06:59:51 PM 489 Views
those are far far from economical or practical compared to state IDs *NM* - 16/01/2012 07:12:30 PM 359 Views
Non-driver IDs, as said above - 16/01/2012 11:55:55 PM 790 Views
they don't cost in all states. They are free in SC *NM* - 17/01/2012 12:00:14 AM 472 Views
