The only thing that physical media has going for it is that people understand it. We've been doing it that way for decades so there's nothing new to learn. On the other hand, a few examples of the benefits of digital files are:

- Availability: Store selection is limited, stores close, etc. Digital files can be obtained anytime, from virtually anywhere in the world.

- Delivery speed: It's much faster to get digital files over the net. Even on a regular broadband connection, you can stream as you download. This is much faster than even driving to a store one block down from you.

- Price: It costs less to distribute digital files. This cost isn't always passed on to the consumer, but the technology itself is cheaper.

Use: Ever tried playing your blu-ray disk on your phone? Digital files can be played on LOTS of devices, and they can be played simultaneously. I can stream a movie to my phone in the bedroom while my wife watches a different movie on her laptop in the kitchen while a group of friends watches another movie on the bigscreen in the living room. The movies can be called up instantly (no hunting down and inserting the disk), you can search for the one you want by dozens of criteria, save a bunch of viewing statistics, instantly skip to different parts of the movie (rather than the scene select or the juddering sort of fast forward that you see with disks), etc. I could write a page on this subject alone. It is MUCH more enjoyable to consume digital content.

Safety: Have you ever lost a disk? Stepped on it in the living room? Friend never gave it back? I've never lost a digital file. Digital files let you be as safe as you want to be. You can back them up to ten different places and be protected from everything short of an apocalypse, or you can backup offsite (keep a portable hard drive at work, and bring it home to plug in) every week or two. With a disk, you have one copy, in one soon-to-be-obsolete format, forever. Period.

Anyway, those are just a few of the advantages of digital media. I'm kind of in a hurry so I know the above isn't well organized or written, but still, I hope I got my point across. It's not just a matter of taste; keeping your movies digitally really does make more sense than limiting yourself to a single disk.
