All those points make perfect sense but what about the glee of walking through a store and seeing the movie you were looking forward to is finally out, on sale or even released for the first time?

I know that's pure nostaliga. When mp3s came out I enjoyed getting every song imaginable as soon as I wanted it. Then I remembered the old times when you actually had to hunt down a song, find the record, decide whether to buy it or not and so on. That's no point that's really in my favor, I know, it's just to show such things matter for people like me, or the ones buying vinyl again these days. It's not always only about your three points, is all I am saying. It's about appreciating a product.

I'm certainly not immune to nostalgia, and I absolutely understand where you're coming from.

I never got that, sorry. I don't wanna watch a film on my phone (nor can I, bc it's old because I only need it to call and text). Or my laptop. My huge HD TV is the smallest screen I wanna see a film on, period..

Nothing wrong with that, but lots of people DO want to stream to multiple devices. I was just pointing it out as a positive feature of digital content.

The discussion is basically the same as people liking their hardcover books in their living room as opposed to the ones on a kindle. You don't tell them that they can print it out if they feel so inclined and put it in their shelf either ;)

That's not quite a good comparison, though. Printing a book takes a lot of time, a decent amount of money for paper and ink, and results in a product that is quite inferior to what you get from a store. A sheaf of printer paper is nothing like a nice paperback. With a digital file, though, A burned DVD is exactly the same as what you get from the store, and the cost to produce a burned dvd is measured in pennies and minutes. Most modern printers will print directly to the backside of a disk, too, so if you want the fancy art, you can even get that.

Valid point of course. I just doubt the majority of people does as many back ups, so I'd still say the chances of losing a file are higher than losing a DVD case.

I agree, but I don't like this to be used as an argument against digital files. Digital files are EASIER to protect and maintain than their physical counterparts. People put lots of time and effort into protecting their DVD collections. They buy shelves, clean the disks of smudges/scratches, carefully pack them away when it's time to move to a new house, etc. It only takes a fraction of that time to set up a halfway decent backup scheme.

And really, in this day and age, people need to be backing stuff up anyway. Computers are too important; there's no excuse anymore to be stupid about one's digital possessions.

In the long run you'll be proven right, I am completely aware of that. People will connect their TV directly to the internet and choose every film imaginable in top quality. All I am saying is that I am no dinosaur and things with DVDs and BluRays will still be the way they are for a while, even if there are tech-savy people like you who do those futuristic things a while before everyone else :P

Yes sir, it takes a long time to turn the titanic around. ;) People are set in their ways and are slow to learn new things. I understand that, and, while I think people would benefit from staying current, I have no complaints about people sticking with old technology. I'm not trying to say that nostalgia is a bad thing, I just didn't like your implications that digital files were inferior to physical media. I'm paraphrasing, but what I heard from you was, "Who wants a crappy avi file?" and "Digital content isn't fit for discerning movie collectors," and "if I love something I don't want it sitting on my hard drive."

I just want to be clear that avi files are BETTER than disks, movie collectors can be (and are) very proud to show off their digital collections, and people have all kinds of files that they love sitting on their home drives.

In short, I don't mind if you continue to love your Model T Ford, and I believe you when you tell me that you enjoy it more than a modern Porsche. . .as long as we're both clear that the Porsche is absolutely superior in every objective measurement. ;)

As for the piracy discussion, I doubt most people do it because they enjoy the privileges you named or prefer them over a hard copy. They are just lazy, cheap and can get it within a few mouse clicks, which just happens to be the digital file.

I know a lot about the world of piracy. Probably more than anyone on this board, for whatever that's worth. And I can tell you that, right now, opinions are split pretty evenly, as far as I can tell. There are a lot of people who, like you, think that piracy is a problem simply because of the pricing issue. Most of the people in this camp are big content owners. They think their content is extremely valuable because, to them, it is, and they are angry and offended by those who they think are just looking to get something valuable for free.

On the other hand, you have a lot of people out there who believe the opposite; that, yes, there are people who download just to get something for free, but that piracy is mainstream because it currently offers a much better experience. No ads, no region locking, no quality issues, no DRM, etc. The people in this camp tend to be independent from the content industry. Consumers, internet advocacy groups, etc.

I'm not sure which group is right, and which reason (price or service) accounts for more incidents of piracy. I just want you to realize that it's a very complicated debate that's nowhere near as cut and dry as you might think. There are a lot of reasons to pirate, and "I want stuff for free" is nowhere near the only motivation.
