I went on ride along with him and he told me that what shocked him the most was how stupid the average criminal was. That same night he made a guy put his hand on a computer screen then he flashed it screen on and off and told the guy that he palm print was being run through the FBI database and if he didn't give us his real name and address before the answer came back he would be arrested for lying to the police. He gave it to us and we arrested him anyways for possession but when I ask my friend how he knew he was lying he laughed and said it was because he had arrested the same guy just about a month earlier and even though he couldn't remember his name he remembered he had lied about it then.
That totally doesn't surprise me, the stuff I've heard, albeit most cops I know are massive bullshitters, even by military standards, so I always suspect there's some chains being jerked with some of the stuff. On the other hand, reality tend to be weirder then fiction. People trying to rob the donut shop across form the station, trying to hijack police cars, and not just unmarked ones, people's videotaping their crimes, taking off gloves to get a better grip and feel on the safe's dial... yeah, and that doesn't include the bluffs like yours above where the cops 'shuts ff the recorder' or says 'ya know, off the record' or the endless 'you're not a cop are you, because you have to tell me if you are'.
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.
