I'm going to boycott by turning off the Olympics and watching Michelle Jenneke nonstop instead. *NM* everynametaken Send a noteboard - 26/07/2012 09:02:59 PM
This week has found me somewhat irritated at the way people are drawing the lines in certain aspects of free expression.

The Chick-Fil-A controversy started everything. While I don't agree with their stance on same-sex rights at all, and while I think the Henson company is within its rights to pull licensing (if their contract allows that), the notion that the mayor of Boston would try to block a free enterprise by legal action is wrong. Unless and until there are laws that make discrimination based on sexual orientation illegal (something that I would support, by the way), the mayor's actions represent a flagrant abuse of his authority.

Now I see that Voula Papachristou of Greece was banned from the Olympics for tweets that some could assume were racist. Specifically, when she heard about a West Nile Virus outbreak in Greece, she tweeted, "With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting some food!!!"

Maybe it's racist, maybe she is. She likes the Golden Dawn Party. The point is that I wouldn't expect that a US athlete would be removed from the games for making comments about illegals. And honestly, she has a right to be a member of any political party she wants to.

And all this once again reminds me that if we only protected the rights of the people who agreed with us, we wouldn't have free speech. People are welcome to boycott Chick-Fil-A (I don't think I would have gone to one even before the controversy), sponsors can pull sponsorship. People are welcome to hate Voula Papachristou, too. However, I think the "official" actions taken against both are disgusting, too.
But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...

Am I the only one who thinks Voula Papachristou should not have been kicked out of the Olympics? - 25/07/2012 10:55:19 PM 1355 Views
Being on a country's Olympic team is a privilege, not a right - 25/07/2012 11:00:24 PM 849 Views
So banning blacks would be cool if it was legal in that country? - 25/07/2012 11:08:52 PM 992 Views
If that's how the country wants to run itself - 25/07/2012 11:13:04 PM 871 Views
The IOC can ban nations from participating for that sort of stunt. - 25/07/2012 11:33:23 PM 1013 Views

I fail to see how the whole team would be thrown out. - 26/07/2012 12:41:16 AM 860 Views
Because the IOC throws them out if the national government interferes in the national committe. *NM* - 26/07/2012 12:43:39 AM 460 Views
Well, that's absurd. - 26/07/2012 01:09:41 AM 940 Views

try looking up the word censorship and ask yourself would their actions supress speech - 27/07/2012 02:59:11 AM 1039 Views
I know the definition thank you. How exactly was her communication suppressed? - 27/07/2012 05:54:39 PM 933 Views
