If you work and qualify for the EITC it is unlikely that your employer will withhold a lot of income from you. If the employer does, that's just mean.

It's a business, after all; the concern is with turning a profit, not feeding employees. Not that I think it's egregious on a direct basis, but the people who argued for and got tax code revisions that increased raxes on the working poor in order to reduce them on the independently wealthy essentially did just that; it just wasn't obvious. I understand the mindset that simply says, "You pay more so I can pay less" but as an absolute it's not good for the country. I do, however, think it's what most of our wealthiest citizens have been saying to the poor and middle class for some time, which I also think is to blame for concerns the middle class is shrinking at an alarming rate, and I don't mean because so many middle class people are working their way into the upper class.
