I just started playing through Icewind Dale (II, but there's a I too, both are in BG's Infinity Engine, the difference is that II plays by 3rd edition rules, i.e. more or less the same as Neverwinter Nights' rules, while I is 2nd edition like BG). Pretty fun so far, and one of the main differences compared to BG II is that you're actually supposed to create your own party of six. Takes out the intra-party interactions which is a shame, but apparently you like it that way, so there you go.
I understood it to be incompatible with BG, so characters from one cannot be used in the other, which killed much of the appeal for me since I never got around to reading the Salvatore books either (well, not entirely true; I did read the first one one night when I was visiting Nick and April and looking for something to do after everyone went to sleep.) Worth checking out, certainly, since I just got an email from GOG a few days ago saying they slashed their prices on IWD, BG and Planescape down to about $3 each (probably in anticipation of BGEs release, which will likely kill whatever market remains for the originals.)
