View original postI know the NYT, one of the two newspapers of record, always has to explain when talking about a Liberal party in another country not being "liberal" in the US usage of the word. For instance when talking about Australian political parties they will give the explanation. So if the NYT is doing it for its readers, who are usually much more educated than the average reader in the US, then it's not too surprising that the word gets used as it does here.

I mean, just the obvious etymological link to 'liberty' should be enough to make one go 'Huh, funny that you'd call it liberal to tell companies what wages to pay'.
