I suppose saying the transgenders is not any different than saying the gays.
But since I'm not part of either group it's not up to me to determine whether it's offensive or not.

As to "thine own self be true," sure internally. But when dealing with others, it's not difficult to avoid intentionally giving offense. If you do so unintentionally, you apologize and move on. It's good manners.
