You know why? Because none of them would have been doing any of their world-saving deeds if Moiraine hadn't asked them to leave the Two Rivers and then convinced them they did have a role to play.

And Moiraine wouldn't have done that but for Gitara, who wouldn't have been able to do anything without the Pattern giving her a foretelling. So everyone is superfluous except the Pattern!
