... if Gawyn is going to be the villain here, he should acquire the medallion in a villainous manner, and be solely responsible for Rand's death.

If someone (Mat or Elayne) simply gives it to him, then they'll bear some responsibility for Rand's death, even if they don't know the truth behind why Gawyn wants it. And, I'd rather not see it transpire that way (just a personal preference).
