Now, he has this talent to a marked extent, but there's plenty of evidence that Rand has some Gateway talent. His larger size gateways could simply be a result of that. Or Logain could be really bad with Gateways. We just have no clue about this.

I think using shielding or Traveling as a real measure of Power strength is antiquated. And the revelation about the extent to which Talent matters (as compared to strength), only makes it clearer that just base strength isn't even close to a real measure of the effective strength a channeler brings to bear in a duel. Mesaana may well be exactly as strong as Semirhage in the Power, but still be capable of being slotted as a weaker Foresaken because she is simply less effective.
