As I said elsewhere, I don't think that "speculative fiction" necessarily entails diversion, but simply that the great majority of it does. Furthermore, I responded in a previous thread that while distance can be used as a tool, I also think that it diminishes the impact of the point being raised. Maus (which always confused me because it got me thinking about walls) is, to my mind, less effective than stories that are more historical. As I said, there is a great deal of subjectivity in determining worth. However, I still believe that the distancing factor of speculative fiction is a risky move for anyone trying to make "big question" points. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Coincidentally, I'm still trying to figure out whether or not to characterise Nabokov's Ada, or Ardor as speculative fiction or not. The "alternate world" was truly bizarre in a lot of ways, and yet ultimately the story had nothing to do about that, except that it seemed yet another device by Nabokov to twist around things (as he twists around his words).
