I don't think an integral part of science fiction is saying "this could never be 'real,' right?" That, to my mind, is an integral part of fantasy. Fantasy is taking a set of circumstances that we know can't take place because the laws of physics (or thermodynamics, or natural selection, or anatomy) are intentionally transgressed. No, to my mind the whole point of science fiction is that the author tries to convince the reader that "this MIGHT take place or be possible, at some point in time".
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
