It "disenfranchises" whoever only barely brings him- or herself to vote as it is. Legolas Send a noteboard - 15/01/2012 05:34:50 PM
I don't understand how requiring photo ID disenfranchises anyone. It's not like they're expensive to require so I don't see why that would play a role. Are minority communities less likely to drive or get another form of photo ID? Is there something I'm missing here? I really don't see the problem with this law. You have to provide photo ID for all sorts of things anyways. I'm just rather perplexed.

And of course that description disproportionately applies to the less well-off and less well-educated, which in turn disproportionately includes minorities.

Of course, I personally think requiring photo ID to vote is a no-brainer, but then that's because I'm used to it (incidentally, I'm also used to voting being compulsory, but that's neither here nor there); when you go from not requiring it to requiring it, it means an extra hurdle before you can vote, and any extra hurdle is likely to make a certain number of people say "oh well, I won't bother then". Of course that's their own choice, so it doesn't actually disenfranchise anyone in the strict sense of the word.
