Do I think one should pay directly to vote? No. Do I think there should be a monetary cost to vote? Yes.

First, one should be able to read to vote. Even public education is not free. The public pays for it. Any 18-year-old voting for the first time and has had a job will have paid for part of their education. But let's say that reading is not necessary to vote. One should at least be minimally informed about the candidates and issues. How is that done? Watching television or listening to the radio. One usually has to buy these.

Second, getting to a poll. Driving there costs whatever one paid for the car, plus fuel. Same with riding a bike or skateboard, or other personal transportation. A bus or subway fare also costs some amount of money, usually. Walking is free, but I doubt many are going to do it barefoot (especially in November). Shoes cost money. As do the other clothes one usually wears in public.

The point is that the saying "Nothing is free" is true. Someone pays for "free" things. And even if the person getting the "free" item doesn't pay for it directly, the cost is still paid by that person somewhere, sometime. So, yes, one should have to pay to vote, even if indirectly. Voting is just another thing that people pay money for as a part of living in society. It's an abstract cost, to be sure, but it's still a cost that should be paid.
