"And here I thought he was just another politician." Joel Send a noteboard - 10/02/2012 01:29:36 PM
He is, and has demonstrated that many times.
A politician doing something that is right, that he thinks is right, and isn't there for self gain. Wow. Bold move. I like it. And here I thought he was just another politician. We may just have the right guy in office.

He always does. Once again he offered a half measure expecting to be hailed as a moderate uniter, got blowback from the right, then publicly pledged defiance while just as publicly preparing retreat. Within a few weeks we will be in the classic Obama end game of increasingly half hearted speeches while sending flunkies to negotiate with the most influential conservative leaders before unconditional surrender. After that only the post mortem remains:

1) Conservatives who have always hated Obama and always will, no matter how he grovels,

2) Liberals infuriated he betrayed them yet again,

3) Moderates and independents who elected him to "pull the car out of the ditch" and wonder why it is still there three years later and

4) Obama looking around at them all mournfully wondering, Why do they all despise me...?

The healthcare debate set the tone; it is only fitting leaving "public" healthcare in private hands forces him to repeatedly re-enact that for the rest of his presidency.

You, sir, are utterly ridiculous.

You said a lot of pointless garbage. All I said was that I'm glad Obama is finally doing something right. I personally don't even necessarily want a president who wants the same things as me. I am willing to admit unlike most people that in the end I know jack shit about many things. So what I think is that I'd like to pick a president who I think has the best chance of doing the right things or doing things with something other than self preservation or advancement in mind. Obama made a move like that. I tip my hat to him. Thats all I was saying. I tip my hat to Obama.

You can tip your hat to whomever you like for whatever reason, of course; it is your hat. As far as Obama doing something right and/or not for personal gain, however, it is a bit early in the game to say he has done either. If he wanted to do something right, as a matter of principle and despite the political cost, he should have either granted an exemption to all Catholic institutions or none, not some. Even at that he could claim a oompromise IF he sticks with his half measure—but he will not; he will cave yet again because of blowback from his own party as well as the far right. If he holds the line, I will eat my words, but I would give 5:1 odds he caves, as always.

Obama does not take stands, he takes positions, which shift wildly depending on the prevailing political wind. If this proves an exception to that rule I will tip my hat as well, but right now my HATS position is a lot firmer than Obamas.
