Not likely, we're pretty draconian about lynches these days
Isaac Send a noteboard - 03/03/2010 09:15:00 AM
After so many last ditch 'you'll regret this' defenses, which tend to come roughly equally from DF and townie alike, it's kind of hard to care when anyone says 'no, no I'm not a DF, really, seriously, I'm not'
If you are innocent, do keep in mind that you dug your own hole on this one, if you are innocent, we'll just blame you
We have to lynch someone, we're not deliberately going to lynch someone we think is town, better no lynch than a dead townie, yeah, but while lynching people every day doesn't guarantee victory, not lynching people when you have good reason to suspect them is a definite road to defeat. We don't know if you're guilty, but you've basically fired off every last DF signal flare I know of. You're at L-1 though and nobody seems to be jumping to hammer, so you can still try to defend yourself a bit better than 'I didn't do it', let me state some of the things on you.
You were abnormally supportive of FT in fashion which indicates really only a few options.
You genuinely thought he was totally not suspicious but lacked any premise for it and offered none. So either you had none and were playing your instincts, which is not really a good thing, or you had one and didn't share it, a pretty anti-town thing to do.
You knew he was probably innocent because you know who is on your DF team, and your certainty about his innocence seemed to materialize mostly after it was obvious he was getting lynched. You never really offered any reasoning, and the flavor of it seemed primarily focused on making sure everyone knew where you stood than actually saving the person you were sure was innocent. Which is a much stronger indicator that you knew he was innocent, wanted everyone to know you thought so, but still wanted him dead.
Note how both those scenarios make you either guilty or arguably more expendable than other townies. Simply speaking, you were too confident in his innocence, you are not a newb, so you must have known, were you town, that he might be guilty and that you're unwavering support would see you dead if he was. That you took no steps to protect against that simply seems unbelievable to most of us. It is the action of a DF who isn't thinking past 'this guy is gonna be clean, or at worst a SK so I won't be suspected of being allied.' Your actions in other games to not support that level of newb-ness, that you would realize how you'd look if he turned up guilty, nor your actions today. However, it is very normal for DFs to do something like that and not look past to realize how doing something that should make them look clean actually makes them look suspicious, even veteran players have made that mistake or similar, but I can't think of the last time a townie gave someone such unwavering support that didn't end in them saying 'Wait stop, I'm the cop, I checked him' or similar.
You repeatedly accused me and others, typically with little basis, and basically always later said you had not accused us, then often did it again.
You are town and genuinely did not realize you were accusing us. Since it was done so much, it can not be said this wasn't your intent, but it may have been subconscious.
You were town and did know you were accusing us and are thus being false, an anti-town thing to do.
You are a DF/SK whatever and didn't realize we saw through your attempts at subtly accusing us and backtracked.
Again, three options here which make you either a DF or arguably more expendable than other townies. There is an unspoken accord to be upfront with accusations, and just lay them out 'X, you're vote on Y seemed out of the blue and unexplained, can you explain it at this time?' etc. Attempts at manipulation, though common, tend to be viewed as a DF tactic, as that tends to be the origin. Little suspicion is drawn by accusations which are upfront and unambiguous.
Trying to imply guilt without an accusation implies a desire not to been as the prime motivator for a lynch. There are occasions a townie might want to distance themselves from a potential lynch, but normally it's a DF who doesn't want to draw eyes when the lynch turns out bad. The alternate reasonings typically involve players who were recently involved in voting for a botched lynch, and are worried about a bad lynch being the prelude to their own, which obviously does not apply to you. Normally, barring that non-applicable case, people who do this do it so suspicion doesn't fall on them when the lynch goes bad, and the effort is made because they expect the lynch to go bad, which is not the norm for a townie accusation, but rather a DF.
You have voted for ranagrande, however, unlike Fox, who has himself been a bit wobbly on the matter, you never really presented evidence on him and seem to have gone back and forth on his guilt. Your own objection to your lynching seem at least as applicable to him, yet you seem content to see him lynched.
You are town, and suspect ranagrande, but have limited grounds to do so, however you have a 'better him than me' mindset (understandable) coupled to genuine suspicion.
You are a DF, or SK, and may well think ranagrande is from the rival faction of baddies. Ironically they may think the same about you.
You are a DF, and it's been obvious nearly from day 1 of day 2 that you were a primary suspect, any alternate candidate is better than none. You've shifted focus repeatedly during the day, hoping something would stick.
Again, none of these really help your case. Since you have previously said you didn't think there was enough evidence to lynch him, and nothing has changed, and ironically ranagrande has not voted for you even though be he town or DF he could do so now with utter impunity, this does not look good.
You've contradicted yourself in previous comments on multiple occasions, yes townies do that on accident, make mistakes, occasionally even do it deliberately. Of course, this is why we encourage townies to carefully check messages too, since lots of mistakes by townies leaves DF's room to maneuver.
Finally, it's about minimizing potential damage. Townies have a responsibility not just to find the baddies, but to avoid getting lynched themselves. It is vitally important that townies avoid do anything that unnecessarily invites suspicion or justifies a lynch, because in doing so, they increase the odds that they won't be lynched, which betters the odds of lynching a DF. If you are a townie, you have sent up so many signal flares of potential guilt that you can only legitimately be considered anti-town, like a miller or a psychocop, roles which by existing, instead of being vanilla, hurt the town. So even if you are truly town and all those signals were accidents, we have to consider that your death has silver linings. Ultimately, lynching anti-townies benefits the town, if not in this game, then in future ones, as we tend to get less false positives. This is why so many people say you've dug your own hole, prior to this nobody really pushed a substantive case on you, because there was no need, you just kept stringing out more and more rope for yourself. Nor can we say 'ah, then he's town after all' because many DFs have done it on accident and in attempting to get out of their self-dug hole have made things worse for themselves.
I'm putting this out now because nobody has really given you a specific case to rebut, and because I want to make it clear what my reasoning on this is. If you can rebut these arguments, or give reasonable alternatives, then you will likely live, if you can not, then I think you will be lynched and I don't think we'll have been wrong to do it, even if you turn out innocent. We must follow the logical chains of evidence and reasoning, right or wrong, but a townie can typically find an alternate clean set of reasoning for their actions, and when they can not, it is invariably because their play has been anti-town, even if their alignment was not. I would discourage anyone from hammering you until you've replied, but please do so quickly, this day has simply gone on too long, and we're unlikely to fault someone for dropping the hammer if you take long.
