I wouldn't have enjoyed if it had been the preachy "females can be as strong and cool as guys" kinda story. It wasn't.
The fact that it has a female heroine was entirely insignificant for the theme and the story of the film. Yes, it's nice to see a well written young female character. But it could have been a boy as well and not much would have changed (except that less females would have been interested in this).

It was far from being a flawless film (or book, probably) but this (or his racism point, which I don't even get) are hardly points to bring up against it.
