Male leads, sure, but it wasn't just the leads. Legolas Send a noteboard - 04/01/2016 11:28:12 PM

View original postThey were Knights so it is hardly surprising they mostly male. I really don't understand the need to believe females can be as effective as men in hand to hand combat. Yes the force is an equalizer but the need to push that fantasy goes well beyond this movie.

In other cases I may agree with you (to take one notorious example, I do have my doubts about the almost completely genderblind Marines in the Malazan series) and I may not - but in this case, I'm glad we agree that with the force, there's no reason why women can't be as effective as men. And since strength in the force seems to play a bigger role in lightsaber combat than simple aptitude or physical strength, same thing there.
View original postSorry you disagree but much like Mad Max in Fury Road the female lead is made more dominant by making the male lead weaker. Finn was little more than a side kick. Same formula as needing to kill off the mentor to allow the student to rise the formula they are using to have dominant female is weak and emotionally damaged supporting male roles. It isn't like even try to hide it, in Fury Roadi the admitted that is what they were doing and the left cheered.

I haven't seen Mad Max in Fury Road, though I did read your comments at the time as well as other comments on its feminist politics. Can't comment until I see it.

I'm still unclear on how Finn is made 'weaker' - as opposed to simply not being a prodigy like Rey is, and simply not the big hero of the tale. You can obviously complain about how easily everything comes to her and how unrealistic that seems - but this is Star Wars, that sort of thing happens all the time, it just happens to be a girl this time. None of that makes Finn 'weaker', so I have no idea where you're getting that.

View original postOne day the white males in your generation will wake up to the fact that making you weaker is objective of the politics you are buying into.

Looked at one way, making white males 'weaker' is really just inherent to the goal of eliminating oppression and discrimination against women or minorities, so sure, that doesn't bother me. The more positive way of looking at it would be that actually having to compete on equal ground may make said white males stronger instead - or at least allow the best among them to shine more truly.
