It is the movement in general to make bad ass females and the related affect of making weak males to play against them. The problem I have with Rey being to strong is it doesn't make sense for her to be this strong regardless of her gender. Rey had no training and was able to defeat trained Sith Lord while Luke still has his ass handed to him after being trained by Yoda. I don't believe that has anything to with gender but is Abram cool stuff pretty stuff ignore the rest film making style. He did the same thing when he decided Kirk needed to go from disgraced cadet to captain of the flag ship in one step.

Han did not have the force and for that neither did Leia until the ROTJ and they were strong characters and were just as popular as Luke and not what I would call insignificant.
