Re: The "Shrinking of Siuan" after stilling destroyed my initial awe for the Amyrlin positition...

Let's face it, when we first saw Siuan she was awe inspiring. She was the personification of the ultimate Aes Sedai, and the most powerful person in the world before the arrival of Rand al Thor.
What struck me as totally counter productive and unbelievable, was how Siuan almost instantly lost all the respect of the Aes Sedai once she arrived in Salidar, post stilling.
I compare this to a situation where Abraham Lincoln suddenly appears in front of the US congress, having miraculously been revived from a 150 year magical stasis, only to be scoffed at and treated with disdain by the members of Congress.
What has Siuan done that she should be compared to Lincoln? More like if Chester A Arthur suddenly appeared before Congress, and even that doesn't compare, because we have good reason to assume he's dead. She was not proven dead or missing for decades, and she was not a legendary leader or heroic figure around whom a national myth was built. They rebelled and rallied in Salidar for the same reason that all the Democrats refused to vote to convict President Clinton - partisan politics. It was because they felt threatened by a factional powerplay, not because they admired Siuan personally (they'd have gone to Tear or someplace significant to her life if that was the case). What struck me as totally counter productive and unbelievable, was how Siuan almost instantly lost all the respect of the Aes Sedai once she arrived in Salidar, post stilling.

You'd think that the Amyrlin had a personality that dwarfed that of normal Aes Sedai, but RJ totally destroyed that idea in his portrayal of Siuan after her stilling.
No, he simply gave us the reality. My only explanation is that he wanted to pave the way for that "slip of a girl", Egwene, to attain the Amyrlin seat, and the only way he could do it with some measure of credibility was to show that the appointment of an Amyrlin was as much a result of political infighting as it was of a superior, dominating personality ascending to her rightful place as most powerful woman in the world.
She didn't even have what you perceive Siuan to have had. She appeared so to a bunch of naive and unsophisticated young people who were all but totally in her power. In her first scene in the book, she is whining about her political troubles, and how dangerous and precarious her position is, and Moiraine is keeping things from her and mentally toting up her shortcomings. RtDB.Anyway, bottomline is that I could not reconcile the dismissive treatment of the post-stilling Siuan with the inherent respect that the position should have conferred to an individual for life.
So based solely on a personal assumption derived from her term of office, you throw out her character portrayal? If I had written the novels, I would not have portrayed her in that fashion. It cheapens the sense of awe that should accompany a woman that used to have Kings and Queens at her beck and call.
Well, there is a reason why RJ & not you is the best selling author. Siuan Sanche never did anything to make kings and queens come - it was due solely to the authority and power that accrue to her office. It is all about the office and NOT the occupant. That was the point - not that Siuan was suddenly so much less, but the transient nature of her power and authority, all of which were derived from a position and not her own accomplishments and character.
