Re: I'm strongly against it RandAllThor Send a noteboard - 22/09/2009 11:45:26 AM
1. Tor insisted this week once again that there are no pre-release copies, and that Jason is the only one who has access to the book.

This info, if true, doesn't take into account that Tor presumably has little or no sway over publishers outside the US or publishers of the book in alternate formats-- folks in the UK (the buying public, not just reviewers) have often gotten their hands on WoT books days or even a full week or two before the release date against Tor's wishes. Surely the idea of making reviewers provide proof that they do actually have the book would put this issue to rest once and for all while also ensuring that the site only offers genuine reviews?

2. That pre-release distribution of the book is a copyright infringement which Tor are serious about nailing down on. RAFO will become a focal point for every person who has messed with Tor, even if they have done so unwittingly.

The ones who would have committed the copyright infringement would be the ones distributing the book, not the ones reading it. Someone can't violate copyright just by reading and reviewing a book, at least from what I know. (If I rented a movie, made a copy of it, and gave it to a friend, I would be violating copyright. If I rented a movie and invited a friend over to watch it with me, though, I wouldn't be violating copyright, nor would I be if I were the friend who was invited over.)

3. Even if there are decent reviews, there are bound to be hoaxes and lies which will damage our reputation as posters or as a place with worthy content.

As another poster mentioned, wotmania's reputation didn't suffer in any significant way that I can tell from allowing spoiler-free reviews, some of which were accurate while others were hilariously off.
