So, I was driving home from work, and I started aimlessly pondering what a meetup between Rand and Egwene would look like if it happened next book.
And I got... really pissed. Like, super pissed.
Because I know, I just KNOW, that's it's going to go something like:
Ambassador Aes Sedai: To Rand Al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn: The Amyrlin Seat requests your attendance upon her so as to discuss blah blah blah
Rand: *roll eyes* Sure, whatever. *Travels to the Tower* Egwene, can we get some work done?
Egwene: How DARE you not show the Amyrlin Seat the respect she deserves! No Aes Sedai will serve you unless you blah blah blah blah blah
It'd totally be in character for her, or at least the general sentiment. And I just got so pissed off thinking about how when Rand was the Dragon and she was just a little dream apprentice, she NEVER showed him respect, on the grounds of "puncturing his ego" but really because she was kind of a bitch.
And you just KNOW that if Rand (or any other Two Rivers character) tries the same familiarity, they're going to get glared at, with a pompous speech for emphasis.
So yeah, thinking of that enraged me.
Then I thought, what if Sanderson goes the other way? The second most likely thing would be for Rand and Egwene to meet, and Egwene to immediately assume Rand would treat her the same way, and then make a big speech to him about how they've both grown, and how they need to work together, and she has a certain station now, and blah blah blah. Which is a good sentiment, but you just KNOW she'd say it in a way that ignores the fact that, again, she was a bitch to Rand.
And Sanderson would probably have Rand smile a rueful smile and go "Oh, just like old days, Egwene saying things before I can!"
So yeah, that enrages me as well.
Honestly, the only way a Rand/Egwene meeting would NOT enrage me would be as follows:
*Egwene Travels to wherever Rand is at the moment*
Egwene: Hey Rand? What's up?
Rand: Heyyyyy! Long time no see! I've been keeping busy. Cleansed the Source, lost a hand. You?
Egwene: I totally became Amyrlin Seat!
Rand: Hah! Awesome!
Egwene: Honestly, Aes Sedai are no different than the annoying villagers in the Council and Circle back home.
Rand: Yeah, Noblemen are mostly all Congers.
Egwene: OK! So, we gonna save the world?
Rand: Totally. I've got a few ideas on that- being the Dragon Reborn sort of makes you focus on that kinda stuff- but I'm open to some suggestions.
Egwene: Sweet. My girls have stiff necks, but I will slap them down if they think their pride is more important than saving the world. As long as our groups toss each other a bone now and then, we shouldn't have any problems.
Rand: Excellent! Now that we're working together, we are totally going to win this war.
THE END
That's the general gist. So, you can see why I'm pre-enraged; Can you honestly imagine Egwene ever being that casual, about anything, ever? Even Rhuarc and the other clan-chiefs used to crack a joke now and then.
