Re: The fidelius charm & the taboo. Oh, and magic food. Camilla Send a noteboard - 02/12/2010 06:46:37 PM
Something is still screwy with the Fidelius Charm. Earlier they mention they had to abandon Grimmaud Place as the Order's Headquarters because the Charm was so weakened. Anyone who had been told of the whereabouts became a Secret-Keeper, and it could be tortured out of any of them. But Snape already knew! Why couldn't he tell other people where it was? They only ever worry about Snape breaking in, not Snape telling others how to break in.

I think that was what the tongue-tying in Grimmaud Place was for. But yes, it is definitely a weak point. And I think it is caused by Rowling knowing Snape is a good guy. She is usually very good at covering those tracks, but I think it slipped here.

Furthermore, back in the fifth book we saw Dumbledore in Grimmaud Place. If the Secret-Keeper can enter the protected dwelling, why weren't James and Lily Potter their own Secret-Keeper? They could have kept their location a secret, and then waited for everything to blow over.

Well, the big question is whether the charm hid them or their house only. From book 2 I assumed they themselves were hidden. If they had been their own secret keepers, then that would have made it impossible for them to communicate with the outside world, and so they could not have told anyone the secret. I think that is one of the main indications in favour of the Potters themselves being hidden. There are of course explanations for why they might have used someone else for the job even if what was hidden was their house, I suppose. I think it was discussed in the re-read of the first book.

Another thing: Harry and the gang are so careful to Apparate to the top step at Grimmaud Place, under the Invisibility Cloak. But it's hard to keep balance and pull-off well. Why not just Apparate to the bottom of the steps, the road, or ever a block away, and walk in under the Cloak. Less chance of letting the Cloak slip. And I thought in the fifth book we saw Order members Apparate from inside the house. Didn't Fred and George Apparate every few feet, Apparate into Harry and Ron's room? All of the sudden Harry, Ron and Hermione can't just Apparate into the house?

Yes, this is weird. I have been wondering about the same thing. Could it be tied to the worry that the trace could still be on Harry? Although I suppose not, as I think they keep doing it after Lupin has punctured that theory. I think they cannot all walk under the cloak at once, as they are now all grown and tall.

And we see Kreacher Apparate out of the house. Even if it's just a difference between house elf magic and wizard magic (we've seen house elves Apparate at Hogwarts, which seems like a great way to smuggle people in), they could hitch rides with him.

Further indications of the taboo are there in that they mention Voldemort and Death Eaters show up in the square outside Grimmaud Place.

I wonder if the Ministry had Taboos set up on the Unforgivable Curses. It'd help them track anyone saying the words "Avada Kedavra" or "Crucio" or "Imperio".

Hmm. People do show up at the ministry just as Harry is shouting Crucio. But I don't think so, because nobody ever objects to Barty Jr's use of them at Hogwarts. Still, it seems like it would have been a good idea.

Hermione's unsuccessful attempts to transfigure mouldy bread lays the ground for Neville's later revelation that food is one of the few things you cannot create magically.

Neville might mention it later, but Hermione is where we first hear about it, during the camping trip. She says you can alter food, even duplicate it, but you can't create it out of thin air.

Ah, yes. I knew it came later, but I wasn't sure where. She must have looked it up after her problems with the mouldy bread.
