Novels like Huck Finn (the greatest American novel in history) work first and foremost because of the quality of the story. If readers reject this, they never get to the other qualities you cite.
Also, be careful about what "literary elites" talk about. The vast majority of folks could care less about those novels because frankly, many are boring as sin, regardless of the scope and meaning.
