Fascinating. Legolas Send a noteboard - 13/08/2012 11:40:22 PM
It's been so long that I first read this book that I obviously can't remember my thoughts then, and in any case I've since read the rest so that colours things, and I don't even entirely remember what comes in which book, but still I get the distinct impression you've a very perceptive view of the series as a whole to date, from having just read the first book. Unfortunately, that also means you're not really going to like things more as you move on - though I don't know that it gets worse exactly, either.
Finally, history. I can see the allusions to the War of Roses, though not as much as I had expected. There certainly does not seem to be any clear overlap between the two. I imagine the main overlap will be the reconciliation of two warring factions through a figure who takes part in both. Say, Jon Snow.

I guess I don't know enough about the War of Roses to see much parallels to it in the series, except in the vaguest of terms if you suppose that Daenerys is a would-be Henry Tudor aiming to reinvade Westeros to reclaim the crown taken from her ancestors. The historical parallels that jumped out at me much more are with Ancient Rome and the early Islamic empires, respectively (the former is a detail, the latter a major plot point in a future book). Oh, and obviously the one with Hundred Years War France. And I suppose you could argue the Dothraki are modeled on the Mongols to a considerable extent, more than any other horse nation... looking for historical parallels is fun.
