We shouldn't have to force every book to meet those criteria.

I actually see it more as an engaging project- finding, reading and discussing books that could been seen as cross-over works if we weren't so determined to set them into a genre. Keep everyone satisfied, while reading the more substantive spec fiction, less frequently breaking for a relaxing fix or stepping up to a serious novel.

Imo, I read enough serious works on my own- imagining discussing some of them with the likes of you, Camilla, Rebekah, Shrike, etc is quite a daunting prospect. Imo, if you go too far in stressing "other literature," you'll narrow it down to more of an elite club rather than providing enough content for another board. I'm not saying that's necessarily bad, just that it is not the reason people come here. That is why I favor keeping it broader, with emphasis on sci-fi/fantasy, and seeing how we grow in the future.
