Similarily, when reality is simply too overwhelming to be written about. Like in Tolkien.

How so in Tolkien's case?


I was primarily thinking of the early fantasy writing as a reaction to the overwhelming experience of the first world war. Walter Benjamin wrote that after the war experience was no longer communicable, only information; and I suspect he was on to something. Avant-garde in the form of Modernism responded in one way; I think it makes sense to see Tolkien, for example, as a opposite but related response.
