It's kind of like the Blob now.

Can you name some of the speculative fiction that you've found to be the best?
Sure. Wraeththu by Storm Constantine. All of her books that I have read have characters who are more human than those most fiction authors can conjure- and not nearly as cool. Dan Simmons- Hyperion. If that ain't brain candy, I haven't read any yet.
The Last Unicorn was so beautiful and haunting and raised so many questions for me. Etc. Also, don't you agree that a book club that focuses solely on that genre is somewhat limited in scope and could get old quickly?
I can see your point, yes. I think that this early in the site's history, we should probably focus more on the SF/F genre. I think having an "Other Lit" type section eventually is good- and that could include its own book club. And don't forget, within genres there are sub-genres. Some books blur the line, and often these are interesting reads.
Finally, there are new books that are more traditionally written. Look at Naguib Mahfouz's Cairo Trilogy, or Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being. They're contemporary works but they're not speculative fiction. There are dozens more I could name, but those are two I enjoyed.
I haven't yet read either of those, although the Kundera is on my list.
What about Camilla's comments on going outside your comfort zone? Do you do that?
I do, yes, and have been doing so more recently than in the past. I usually find nonfiction dry and dull, but if I find something on a subject that interests me, it can grab me like a work of fiction. Well, in a different way, but you get what I mean. General fiction is always scary to me, because I feel like there's so much crap out there, and I haven't found a cool gen fic community that can help me sort out the crap like wotmania did.
Classics is probably the one area I'll likely not dip my toes into much anymore. I have to say, Simmons makes points that are as deep and interesting as anything Kafka or Camus has written, but I actually enjoy reading him.
