Although perhaps it is more of the things it lacks.
Depth, emotion, pathos, ideas...Why has it stood the test of time? should be an interesting question.
An accident of timing. Dumas wrote in the era of the Great Novel, and he wrote a wildly popular adventure story. Maybe some thematic things: was the Count's revenge justified, appropriate, overly harsh, etc.
Sure, if you're writing a book report in the fifth grade.
Why does it end the way it does? (That question will be more specific in the actual post. I don't want to give spoilers yet.
)

Let me just go to wikipedia...I'm not all that excited about the book...okay, what is special about the end?
Which character(s) do you like & why?
The question should rather be, "Which characters do I even remotely care about?" with the answer being, "None". I almost sort of cared about the Abbe Faria.
It's true that the book isn't very deep, and I agree completely that it is more an adventure book than anything else. But there are elements worth discussing.
Not really.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

The Count of Monte Cristo was a terrible choice for a book discussion.

Not really strange as Eco has long been fascinated by this book
