because there are things to discuss in "pleasure" fantasy. No, you can't spend hours dicussing them, but there are themes, there is depth. But when you're scoffed at for even presenting it, it totally shuts you down.

For example, one of my favorite books to talk about is Kushiel's Legacy. I really like the version of our world she created. I really like discussing the implications on history, cultural development, and how different tiny plot bits she drops here and there contribute to the big picture (in all respects).

But I would never open such a thread here. Why? Because it would either be ignored or scoffed at.


I've never read any of Carey's stuff ... but those kinds of discussions (implications on history, cultural development, plot devices, narrative techniques, etc etc) are ones I like, and I'm willing to be that a lot of other people would participate too. There are very clearly a lot of people who frequent this board who are intelligent fantasy fans. And anyway, you never know until you try. :)
