First of all, the length of the book by itself is an issue - book club books should not require such herculean efforts to finish. Second, the REASON the length is such a problem for me is partially due to the lack of quality. Third, we can't talk about the book on its own terms, but only through the prism of why people still seem to like it.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
