Science fiction, to my mind, is only science fiction when it at least attempts to adhere to known laws of physics at the time. When it knowingly bends, breaks or disregards them, it becomes fantasy. Suvin's definition fails to recognise this and as such doesn't distinguish between fantasy and science fiction, which are generally regarded as distinct genres.

And maybe, just maybe I was subconsciously equating SF/F with porn and obscenity. Of course, I like both porn and obscenity, so I'm not sure that's a disparaging comment, but it does draw the same disparaging parallel regarding literary value. Once something of a sexual nature has literary value, it immediately becomes "erotica" as opposed to "porn". I'm thinking about reading L'Histoire d'O, which, yes, I do have in French.

VanderMeer sounds interesting, though I think I'd be more likely to read Ada again than try something else in the alternate reality of the same, now that I know the entire story. I think I would catch more nuances than I did the first time. Also, as I work on my French (I know it well enough but I want to get slang, outdated words, and all those stylistic points that you don't usually know if you're not a native) it may start to open a few more avenues to interpretation, though I suspect Nabokov's French was not impeccable.
