Sauron is damned scary. The Dead? He practically rebuilds a ruined Gondor and an Arnor that has been nonexistent. And he gives the hobbits their land free of any big people.

Also, he has healing hands!

I am not sure intrigue should be the criteria for a good king.

Edit: you have not forgotten the beer also becomes better with him as king, I hope?


Intrigue and politics being an important one of those. He needs a lot of personal courage and all, and his healing hands, but the way Tolkien describes Middle-Earth, Gondor is a very loyal and homogeneous country indeed, without much in the way of political undercurrents or people he has to reconciliate. Admittedly, Arnor is trickier, what with the relations with the Hobbits and the local folk, and same with Umbar and the other southern/eastern lands.

Of course, he does most of the impressive stuff before actually being a king, regardless. ;)
