Well it was very similar to A New Hope... in many ways it felt like a tribute movie. Knowing Star Wars fans, they'd want something reminiscent of the past, and would complain if something else was delivered. You can never win with people.
My point was, they are going to bitch. I didn't mind at all.
Nothing science-defying about it... suppose it could be made one day.

I was more thinking about how people can watch it fire while standing on the surface, or the complete lack of any gravitational effect of it draining and destroying the sun. Does is suck up one sun per shot? Wouldn't that mean it needs to move to a new system for the next shot? Wouldn't all the trees and stuff die moving through hyperspace?
I'm sorry if improving the Death Star by a factor of at least 10 was not sufficient scientifically.

That's not exactly common technology, more like an aberrant thing, that might have had unnatural knowledge behind it. It's not really indicative of the technological state advancing.
It's only been 30 years, not 30 millenia, and after the Empire fell the galaxy fell into relative anarchy. Scavenging the remnants is a consistent theme in the movie. I doubt people had the resources to invent new weapons when half of the Star Destroyers are belly up in the desert. But there were a few small things, like a stormtrooper who can fight against lightsabers.
Those are excellent points. Mind you, I don't actually have a problem with the stagnant tech, and love coming up with explanations for that stuff. Actually now, I wonder if both sides didn't upgrade their fighters for atmospheric flight to spare themselves the logistical headaches of maintaining two sets of vehicles. If X-wings could always do what they do in VII, why bother maintaining those snowspeeders on Hoth? They seem to be rather poorly adapted to cold for their name, given why Han needed to take a tauntaun to find Luke. And the New Order obviously doesn't have the resources of the Empire, so they use TIE fighters for close air support, rather than walkers. Modifying them to be capable of inter-atmospheric flight saves a whole lot of problems.
We don't know the back story or why Hux feels the way he does.

I was referring more to behavior (the OTT shrieking) on his part, rather than motivations.
Probably because he's... 18! Maybe we should give the guy a bit of time to flesh out considering he's an apprentice in the truest sense of the word. There are more than hints that he's very new to the Dark Side. Isn't it nice to finally have a dark jedi whose journey we can follow instead of a mindless drone who dies at the end of each movie?
Which was my point.
Finally, some insight.
You shouldn't have interrupted before I made my point.
I'm not sure what else you want with Ren? He's at least as proficient with Force push/pull compared to Vader.

I found Vader's dealing with a gun shot far better. He took the hit without even seeming to notice, while Ren had to freeze it and get out of the way, because it would presumably have killed him.

He's got great mental skills and instincts. What's the problem?
He tried to read two people's minds, one beat him and he went running to the boss to whine.
But why is this an issue when it's a trilogy? It's going to be revealed.
We'll see. The last time I accepted shortcomings as something to be clarified in the next two installments was a little tome called "The Gathering Storm" by Brandon Sanderson.
I assumed that the military was ruined along with 5 planets and about 500 billion people.
Yeah, later in the movie. Why, at the outset, are they relying on a Resistance? The New Order blew up the government because they "support the Resistance." Why was the government not resisting with armies and fleets. Does the government only rule those five planets? Was the military concentrated on them?
No no no... it was perfect. We want an educated Jedi knight who can speak well, like Luke, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gonn. God help us if we get another gung-ho cowboy with a lightsaber.
You mean...like Luke? What about Mace Windu? Yoda's syntax might have been perverse, but his pronunciations were American.
We want the Queen's English, not the rebel perversion you people made. The popular theory is that Rey is Luke's daughter and he sent her to that planet after Ren killed all his students to protect her.
So she got the accent from him?

This might be the first ever mainstream blockbuster movie, where the villain worries that he's not evil enough, and how can he be more evil and live up to the example of his role model!

Cannoli get a grip.

It was not a complaint.
I for one am glad that this cross-bladed sabre was shown to have purpose, as it received such shit from purists. I can imagine you rolling your eyes!
I was not one of them. I always thought those things would be more useful than Maul's double blade. And my reference provided yet another use for them, as it would be a lot more painful getting shoved up that far.
So basically you haven't understood a thing that has ever come out of Alec Guinness' mouth?
Don't compare him to Gwendolyn Christie. And if he ever spoke during an action scene, or when FX were drowning him out, I might have had trouble.
I'm sorry to say that Leia has never actually done anything of use,
The Lanfear of the Rebellion, eh?
