Comparable to Osan'gar fighting Rand in the end of PoD. Nothing suggested then that Osan'gar actually died.

But in Graendal's case, it's the most obvious explanation, if you don't want to come up with far-fetched explanations, how Graendal might have outsmarted Rand. It's rather comparable to Sammael's and Osan'gar's death.
